PhD with Coursework (Finance)
Overview
Academic staff in the Department of Finance are committed pushing the boundaries of knowledge within their fields of expertise. This commitment is passed on to our PhD students, who enjoy access to the excellent facilities and strong research focus within the Department.
Current research areas include derivatives, financial institutions, finance education, market microstructure, real estate finance, corporate finance, asset pricing and international finance.
Once you have chosen your research area, you will receive regular and experienced supervision, as well as access to Australian, US and global financial databases and an active seminar series.
Program structure
The PhD with Coursework (Finance) is three years of full-time or six years of part-time study, with a maximum of one year full-time equivalent of coursework and two years of full-time research.
The first year of coursework consists of six semester-long subjects comprising one economics subject, two quantitative subjects, three finance subjects and a year long (double subject) Thesis Workshop.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for entry to the PhD with Coursework (Finance) you must have either:
- A four-year honours degree at minimum H2A (75-79%) standard from an Australian university; or
- A qualification or combination of qualifications considered by the Research and Higher Degree Committee to be equivalent, in an area that is relevant to the intended PhD.
In addition, you must:
- Satisfy the University's English language requirements; and
- Have prior academic research experience at 4th year or Masters level.
- Appicants are strongy encouraged to provide results of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). For entry in 2010, this will be a requirement for all applicants.
Assessment
Students are required to attain an average mark of at least 75% in their coursework in the first year and satisfy the requirements of a confirmation seminar. The award of the PhD is based solely on the result of the thesis.
