Master of Finance
Overview
The Master of Finance, previously known as the Master of Financial Management, is a practical and career-oriented program that provides an ideal entry into the finance industry, with broader and more comprehensive training than is feasible in an undergraduate degree.
The program will give you solid understanding of financial management principles and their application to corporate financial policy.
You will gain valuable insights into Australian and international financial markets, knowledge of derivative assets and the operation of the markets in these assets, as well as strong understanding of specialised aspects of the financial industry.
In addition, you will gain the skills needed to analyse and interpret developments in financial practice, making you an ideal candidate for potential employers.
Program structure
Subjects
- First year: eight subjects (five core and three elective)
- Second year: eight subjects (six core and two elective)

Duration
- Two years of full-time or four years of part-time study
- Maximum time for completion is six years
Availability
- International students can only complete the program on a full-time basis
How you will benefit
On successful completion of this program, you should be able to:
- Identify and apply fundamental principles of finance
- Identify, critically evaluate and interpret financial decision problems
- Analyse new and ever-changing financial issues
- Analyse and synthesise financial data within a constantly evolving financial environment
- Describe the significance and value of your knowledge gained to the wider community (including business and the financial industry)
- Apply knowledge of computer systems and software where appropriate to the study of finance.
CPA program graduates who enrol in the Master of Finance can also receive credit for one of the following subjects:
- Accounting for Decision Making
- Financial Statement Analysis
Minimum entry requirements
- An undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline with some studies in Finance.
"Some studies in Finance" means you should have, at the minimum, studied the equivalent of these University of Melbourne undergraduate finance subjects: 333-201 Business Finance, 333-301 Investments, 333-302 Corporate Finance.
- A minimum score of 550 in the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
- A personal statement
- The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
