Master of Commerce (Finance)
Overview
The Master of Commerce (Finance) offers high-level academic training in finance. It is designed to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the many advanced aspects of finance, and to build upon your analytical skills.
Many of the graduates and currently enrolled part-time students are employed in senior positions in the business and financial community.
The program is an appropriate foundation for those intending to proceed to the PhD program in Finance.
Program structure
Subjects
- One core finance subject, one quantitative subject, four elective subjects and the year-long (double subject) Research Report

- One year of full-time or two years of part-time study
- Maximum time for completion is four years

- International students can only complete the program on a full-time basis
How you will benefit
On successful completion of this program, you should be able to:
- Apply the necessary analytical skills and techniques to critically assess a wide range of issues in financial management
- Apply quantitative rigour in the assessment and analysis of financial research issues
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the fundamental principles of finance
- Critically evaluate relevant scholarly literature in finance
- Identify, critically assess and interpret financial decision-making
- Analyse new and ever-changing financial issues, and research data within a constantly evolving financial environment
- Initiate a research project and formulate viable research questions for the Research Report in Finance
- Design, conduct and report independent and original research on a closely-defined research project in the area of finance
- Manage financial information effectively, including the application and advanced knowledge of computer systems and software.
Minimum entry requirement
Admission to the Master of Commerce (Finance) course normally requires either:
- A four-year undergraduate degree with a specialisation in Finance, or equivalent, with at least an H2A (75%) average in the specialisation; or
- Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance, or equivalent, with at least an H2A (75%) average.
Additional requirements:
- A minimum score of 550 in the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
- A personal statement
No work experience is required for admission.
The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
