Master of Applied Finance
Overview
The Master of Applied Finance is a practical and career-oriented program at the cutting edge of theory and practice.
It is designed for practitioners with a degree and two or more years' experience in financial management and/or financial decision making. The program provides valuable insights into financial management principles and their applications to corporate financial policy, as well as derivatives and the operation of the markets in these assets.
The program suits the needs of working professionals, with evening classes enabling the combination of work and study. Alternatively, you may choose to take a break from your career and focus exclusively on your studies for one year.

Duration
- One year of full-time or two years of part-time study
- Maximum time for completion is four years
Availability
- Admission to the program is in Semester 1 and 2, however part-time students may only commence in Semester 1 of any given year
- International students can only complete the program on a full-time basis

- Describe and analyse financial management principles and the changing knowledge-base in finance
- Identify, interpret and critically assess financial decision-making
- Analyse financial data within a constantly evolving financial environment
- Apply the techniques necessary to analyse and interpret developments in financial practice
- Analyse the international context and sensitivities of financial management and financial markets
- Solve problems in corporate finance and financial markets, including those involving derivative assets and the operation of the markets in these assets

- Manage financial information effectively, including the application and knowledge of computer systems and software where appropriate to the study of finance, and a receptiveness to the opportunities offered by new technologies.
In addition, you will gain professional recognition by:
- Finance and Treasury Association - upgrade membership to Certified Finance Treasury Professional status
- Australian Securities and Investment Commission - the following subjects are included on the ASIC directory: Fixed Income, Derivative Securities, Principles of Finance, Risk Management and Regulation, Financial Planning and Advising.
Minimum entry requirements
- An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent, including one or more subjects in introductory statistics and/or mathematics
- A minimum of two years' relevant documented work experience in the areas of financial management and/or financial decision making*
- A minimum score of 550 in the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
- A personal statement
- The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
* Please note: To meet the work experience requirement, applicants must have worked in a meaningful position of financial analysis or financial decision-making for a minimum of two years. Internships, by their very nature, involve highly supervised work experiences that, whilst valuable as an educational and vocational experience, do not provide the sort of depth of experience required of successful applicants to the MAF program.
