Postgraduate Diploma in Finance
Overview
The Postgraduate Diploma in Finance is a practical, career-oriented program that equips you with an enhanced understanding of the applications of finance theory, as well as detailed knowledge of the operations and activities of financial markets.
Designed for students with an academic background in finance, it enables you to gain broader training in finance than is typically feasible within an undergraduate degree.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Finance is also the first year of the two-year Master of Finance.
Program structure
Subjects
- Eight semester-length subjects (five core and three elective)

Duration
- One year of full-time or two years of part-time study
- Maximum time for completion is four years
Availability
- International students can only complete the program on a full-time basis
How you will benefit
On successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance, you should be able to:
- Identify and apply fundamental principles of finance
- Identify, critically evaluate and interpret financial decision problems
- Analyse new and ever-changing financial issues
- Analyse and synthesise financial data within a constantly evolving financial environment
- Describe the significance and value of your knowledge gained to the wider community (including business and the financial industry)
- Apply knowledge of computer systems and software where appropriate to the study of finance.
You will gain detailed understanding of:
- Financial management principles and their application to corporate financial policy
- Australian and international financial markets
- Derivative assets and the operation of the markets in these assets
- Various specialised aspects of the finance industry.
CPA program graduates who enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance can also receive credit for one of the following subjects:
- Accounting for Decision Making
- Financial Statement Analysis
Minimum entry requirement
- An undergraduate degree of good academic standard, with some studies in Finance (or its equivalent).
"Some studies in Finance" means you should have, at the minimum, studied the equivalent of these University of Melbourne undergraduate finance subjects: 333-201 Business Finance, 333-301 Investments, 333-302 Corporate Finance.
- No prior work experience is required for admission.
- The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
