Master of Economics
Overview
A Master of Economics will provides advanced training in economics and econometrics, and develops your skills and experience in undertaking independent research.
The program is designed for students with prior training in economics who wish to acquire the advanced skills needed to practice as a professional economist in the public or private sectors.
The Master of Economics is also an appropriate foundation if you intend to proceed to a PhD program.

How you will benefit
On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Critically evaluate ideas, views and evidence in support of an argument or proposition
- Solve problems in economics and business decision making by applying appropriate economic theories, principles, and the econometric analysis of data
- Clearly communicate economic related ideas, theories and solutions to peers and the wider community, both in the written and verbal form
- Synthesise ideas, theories and data in developing solutions to economic problems
- Apply ethical approaches to research and practice through an understanding of economic best practice.
Minimum entry requirements
To be eligible, you must have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree with the equivalent of a major in economics, including subjects which satisfy the prerequisites for both the core and quantitative first year subjects in the program.
If you meet the following requirements, you may be admitted directly into Year Two of the program:
- A four year honours degree in economics or a relevant postgraduate degree with at least an H2B (70%) average
- Completion of subjects which satisfy the prerequisites for both the core and quantitative second subjects in the Master of Economics.
- Provide results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
- A personal statement
The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
