GMAT and GRE
All applicants seeking entry to masters and PhD level programs in Semester 1 2009 are required to sit the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) and submit results as part of their application. Please note that applicants to economics programs must sit the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test in place of the GMAT.
The faculty reserves the right to waive the GMAT requirement.
Original documentation of GMAT or GRE results must be submitted with your application.
Please refer to the GMAT and GRE information below.
What is the GMAT?
The GMAT is a standardised assessment, delivered in English, and is used by leading business schools to assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management.
The GMAT consists of three sections: Analytical Writing, Quantitative and Verbal, and measures a person's ability to read, understand and reason logically with both verbal and quantitative material. It does not measure knowledge in specific subjects.
The Selection Committee sets no minimum score for GMAT performance, but uses it as one of several indicators of a candidate's ability to succeed in the program.
In many countries, the GMAT is now a computer adaptive test (CAT) and appointments to undertake the GMAT can be made easily.
You can register for the GMAT by contacting the test co-ordinator in your home country. Details of these contact numbers are available at the GMAT website: www.mba.com.
In Australia, the GMAT is administered by:

What is the GRE?
The Graduate Record Examination – General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE General Test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study.
The GRE is the standard test used for specialist economics programs around the world. Therefore, the following programs at the Melbourne GSM require GRE results (in place of the GMAT) to be submitted with the application:
- Master of Commerce (Economics)
- PhD with Coursework (Economics)
- PhD with Coursework (Melbourne Institute)
- PhD with Coursework (Actuarial Studies)
To take the GRE, you can make an appointment with a testing centre in your home country by visiting www.ets.org.
In Australia, the GRE is administered by Prometric.
