PhD by Thesis (in the Area of Actuarial Studies)
Overview
The Centre for Actuarial Studies has an international reputation for the calibre of its research.
PhD students play an integral role in the Centre, and are encouraged to participate in academic activities that uphold this reputation. Students have the opportunity to produce a piece of original research on a topic of interest to the actuarial community, and are well prepared for a career in either academia or industry.
Research topics within the Centre range from theoretical to applied. Centre members regularly publish research in leading international actuarial journals and present at conferences, both in Australia and overseas.
Program structure
- Three years of full-time or six years of part-time study
- You are required to undertake independent research and present a thesis in such a form as the Academic Board prescribes
Admission requirements
To be eligible for entry to the PhD by Thesis (in the area of Actuarial Studies) you must have either:
- A four-year honours degree in actuarial studies, commerce or related discipline at minimum H2A (75-79%) standard from an Australian university; or
- A qualification or combination of qualifications considered by the Research and Higher Degree (RHD) Committee to be equivalent.
In addition, you must:
- Satisfy the University's English language requirements; and
- Have prior academic research experience at 4th year or Masters level.
- For entry in 2010, applicants must also provide results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Assessment
The award of the PhD is based solely on the results of the research thesis.
