Overview
The Master of Commerce in the area of Actuarial Studies will equip you with advanced skills for carrying out independent and sustained research. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to original research.
The program offers an appropriate foundation for students intending to proceed to a PhD program.
Program structure
A full-time student should complete the program in two consecutive semesters. Students will be required to pursue original research on an approved topic, and must consult with the Director for Actuarial Studies before lodging their submission for approval of their research project with the Faculty Office.
Once you are accepted for the degree of Master of Commerce by Thesis a supervisor is appointed and you are expected to consult with them regularly.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for entry to the Master of Commerce by Thesis in the area of Actuarial Studies you must have either:
- A four-year honours degree in actuarial studies, commerce or related discipline at least second class Honours (H2B 70-74%) standard from an Australian university; or
- Successfully completed of a preliminary course, normally the relevant postgraduate diploma, at an overall standard of at least second class honours.
In addition, you must:
- Satisfy the University's English language requirements; and
- Supply a personal statement with your application.
- For entry in 2010, applicants must also provide results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Assessment
Students are required to present the results of their research in the form of a thesis of approximately 30,000 words or, on the recommendation of their supervisor, a series of papers.
