Graduate Diploma in Actuarial Studies
Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Actuarial Studies provides non-actuarial graduates who have mathematical or statistical specialisations with an initial education in the field. It will equip you with the skills necessary for immediate transition into the actuarial workplace as a trainee actuary.
There is growing demand for actuarial graduates, with more than 800 actuaries in active employment in Australia and more than 300 Australian actuaries working overseas, in the areas of life insurance, superannuation, management, general insurance and investments.
Program structure
Subjects
- Eight subjects (100 points) chosen from approved undergraduate or honours subjects
- Students must complete at least 75 points from the Faculty's undergraduate or honours actuarial subjects, and at least 50 of these points must be at level-300 or level-400

Duration
- 12 months of full-time or two years of part-time study
- Maximum time for completion is four years
Availability
- Admission to the program is in Semester 1 only
- International students can only complete the program on a full-time basis
How you will benefit
On successful completion of this program, you should have:
- Strong analytical, quantitative and technical skills, particularly in the areas of statistical, financial and actuarial modelling
- The ability to synthesise information and solve complex problems
- Practical skills in the application of software in problem solving, and in the operation of insurance and finance products
- Developed strong communication, problem solving, statistical reasoning, software and analytical skills.
If you attain a suitably high standard upon completion of the program, you will gain exemptions from part of the examination to qualify as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
Minimum entry requirements
- An undergraduate degree or equivalent, with a major sequence in mathematically based subjects such as Statistics, Econometrics or Applied Mathematics, with at least H2B (70%) average in final year subjects; and
- Completion of studies in probability and statistics to a level at least equivalent to that required for a pass in Subject 101 of the examinations of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
