Master of Accounting
Overview
The Master of Accounting is an advanced, specialised accounting degree for accountants.
The course builds competencies in leading edge accounting and business systems practices, developing your skills in business analysis, critical and strategic thinking, problem-solving and oral and written communication.
You will gain broad understanding of the key contemporary issues in accounting and specific competencies in the areas of external financial reporting, cost management, performance management, auditing and business systems.
It is ideally suited to recent graduates and junior executives who wish to extend their skills and knowledge.
Program structure
The Master of Accounting is offered in two streams depending on your level of work experience (see minimum entry requirements).

- 12 subject program: eight core and four elective

Availability
- 12 subject program: will normally be completed in 18 months of full-time or three years of part-time study
- 16 subject program: will normally be completed in two years of full-time or four years of part-time study
How you will benefit
On successful completion of this program, you should be able to:
- Identify and analyse the thinking and developments of leading contemporary accounting and business systems in: financial accounting, performance management, cost management, accounting-based equity security valuation, business systems and auditing
- Demonstrate advanced critical and strategic thinking skills in relation to accounting and business analysis issues
- Apply technical and analytical skills to address specific accounting and business system issues
- Critically evaluate accounting and business system issues emerging from strategic developments in practice and regulation.
Students who have successfully completed the ICAA CA/PY or the CPA Australia PY Programs may receive credit for up to four Master of Accounting elective subjects.
Master of Accounting graduates who are seeking CPA accreditation should visit CPA Careers.
Students may choose to undertake an optional research semester in their final semester. These students will be able to develop their skills in conducting independent research including analysis; formulating; interpreting and application of accounting data from a range of sources.
Minimum entry requirements
- 12 subject program: open to applicants with an undergraduate degree in accounting, or equivalent, and at least one year of full-time (or equivalent) documented relevant work experience
- 16 subject program: open to applicants with an undergraduate degree in accounting, or equivalent
- A minimum score of 550 in the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
- A personal statement
- The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above
- Entry to the research semester will be dependent upon students attaining a minimum Grade Point Average of 80 in their prior Master of Accounting subjects and/or subject to the Program Director’s approval.
