Student Entrepreneurs Pitch Competition: 23 October

Sponsored by the Melbourne Graduate School of Management, the Student Entrepreneurs Club organised IdeaPitch 2008, a pitch competition event for budding entrepreneurs.

The event started off with a pitching workshop on the 8th of October. The workshop, given by Stephen Sammartino, founder of Rentoid and author of Startupblog, educated the students on how to prepare and deliver an elevator pitch and was the perfect opportunity for students to network and create teams for the competition.

Students who submitted their application to participate in the finals first had to pitch their ideas at the semi-finals on the 16th of October. Students had to enter in either one of the two categories: Business ideas that were in their conceptual stage or Business ideas in a more developed stage.

Eleven teams made it to the final round held on the 23rd of October; these students had to pitch for five minutes in front of a judging panel and a live audience of students and representatives from local businesses. Many thanks to Brooke Young, Executive Director of the Melbourne GSM who did a wonderful job as MC for the evening, as well as Professor Simon Bell, from the Department of Management & Marketing, who was one of the judges. SIFE students Jessica Rae and Richmond Glasgow won the first prize in the conceptual stage category, while 3 students from the Faculty of Engineering won the first prize in the more developed stage category. Using mobile technology, they developed a reminder service for patients taking prescription medication. A pilot of this service will be implemented at two pharmacies in Melbourne soon.

After the announcement of the winning teams and awarding of prizes, finalists, judges and guests had the opportunity to network over canapés and refreshments. A great evening was had by all. Congratulations to our Bachelor of Commerce students Amir Nissen, Arum Sugiono, Roshni Govindaraj and Daniel Lim, and the volunteers who assisted the Entrepreneurs Club, for all their hard work in organising this very successful event.

On Thursday 18th September, The Melbourne Graduate School of Management welcomed American political advocate and senior business woman Sue Toigo to the University as part of the inaugural “Creating Future Leaders Series”. Ms Toigo presented to 30 undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculty of Economics and Commerce on the topic, “Making the most of your International Experiences – The Benefits of Studying Abroad”.

Ms Toigo reminded students that they were part of a large international network here at the University and encouraged students to share their names and email addresses to begin the networking process, which they all did at the end of the seminar.

Ms. Toigo’s presentation also focused on ways in which students could develop their leadership skills now whilst at university to give them a competitive advantage for the future by doing such things as joining a student group, or volunteering. The seminar was insightful and inspirational to all who attended.

During the afternoon Ms. Toigo met with members of the FMAA student group and they had a very lively and interesting discussion about different issues concerning Commerce students today.
