Ben & Jerry's is coming to town!
25 November
Come and meet Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, co-founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream on Wednesday 25 November for their 'Doing well by doing good' seminar about sustainable and community friendly business practices. The seminar will take place from 12 - 1pm in the Melbourne GSM Graduate Careers Centre (level 5 of the Spot, 198 Berkeley St).
Back in 1978, close friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making, opened their first Scoop Shop in a dilapidated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. Whilst they occasionally disagreed on the size of the chunks going into the ice cream, one thing they did agree on was having fun. As Jerry put it, “ if it’s not fun, why do it?”. They also decided from the start that business has a responsibility to give back to the community in which it operates, a philosophy that is still important to the business today. 30 years on, with a continued focus on sourcing the finest ingredients to create euphoric chunks & swirls, Ben & Jerry’s now operates in over 30 countries, spreading joy for the belly and soul across the globe with a mission to make the best possible ice cream in the nicest possible way, using business as a tool for social and environmental change.
External competition: Dell holds competition to change the world
The University of Texas and Dell are inviting Aussie Uni and TAFE students to take part in a global competition to generate ingenious ideas to change the world. Individuals, or groups of University or TAFE students are challenged to submit a plan that combines creativity and innovation to tackle a pressing social issue and win US$50,000 to put that plan into action! Entrants are asked to push for positive change at home, or anywhere in the world, with a social innovation that tackles a social problem to help every human reach their potential. There is no limit to the imagination and any significant social issue can be addressed in this competition.
The competition is open worldwide and students have until 1 March 2010 to develop their plans.
How it works: Students work in teams or as individuals to enter their social innovation online before the deadline. From the initial ballot of entries, a small group of semifinalist teams are chosen to write a venture plan and record a 3-minute video pitch of their idea. From the semifinalists, three teams are selected as finalists and invited to Austin, Texas to pitch live in front of a panel of esteemed judges. One winner is chosen and awarded US$50,000 as seed funding to launch their venture.
You be the judge! Along with the student competitors, anyone can comment and vote on the ideas submitted into the competition. In each round of the competition, people can vote on the projects they like the most by promoting them up in the ranking. It’s also possible to leave comments and suggestions on the ideas you find most intriguing and add your expertise.
