Ben & Jerry's is coming to town!
Ben & Jerry's is coming to town! Wednesday, 25 November, 12pm – 1pm, Level 5 The Spot
Come and meet Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, co-founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream on Wednesday 25 November for their 'Doing Well by Doing Good’- a seminar about sustainable and community friendly business practices. The seminar will take place from 12 - 1pm in the Melbourne GSM Graduate Careers Centre (level 5 of the Spot, 198 Berkeley St).
Back in 1978, close friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making, opened their first Scoop Shop in a dilapidated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. Whilst they occasionally disagreed on the size of the chunks going into the ice cream, one thing they did agree on was having fun. As Jerry put it, “ if it’s not fun, why do it?”. They also decided from the start that business has a responsibility to give back to the community in which it operates, a philosophy that is still important to the business today. Thirty years on, with a continued focus on sourcing the finest ingredients to create euphoric chunks & swirls, Ben & Jerry’s now operates in over 30 countries, spreading joy for the belly and soul across the globe with a mission to make the best possible ice cream in the nicest possible way, using business as a tool for social and environmental change.
Internet Business Model Competition: Wednesday 21 October
The Internet Marketing Business Model Competition is a student competition organised by Dr Brent Coker, Department of Management and Marketing, as part of the 352-665 Internet Marketing subject.
Students enrolled in the subject were asked to team up, develop a model for an internet business and present it to a judging panel made up of highly successful industry professionals. The panel members were: David Clarke, founder of www.webjet.com.au; Simon Baker, founder of www.realestate.com.au and Stephen Sammartino, CEO Rentoid.
Each of the 12 participating teams was allotted ten minutes to present their idea and five minutes to answer questions. The judges’ task of selecting a winner from all the innovative and interesting ideas presented was not an easy one. The winners, Kate Mulqueen, Napaporn Likhitdechasakdi, Chanyanuch Pattanakitcharoenchai, Varad Agarwal and Ganesh Gopalakrishnan cheered as the name of their team, ‘Rebels without an identifiable IP address’, was announced.
The evening concluded with a reception where the participants, judges and guests shared thoughts about the competition and relaxed over drinks and canapés.

The MBP will provide an opportunity for students to gain work experience during semester breaks. In 2010, we will be trialling the first business practicum, with the aim to have it a registered subject in 2011.
An MBP will involve 10 consecutive working days, working in a team of four at a Melbourne business/organisation, with the team making a presentation on the final day.
The first MBP is with the Royal Botanic Gardens. It will involve developing an environmental accounting model for the Royal Botanic Gardens to ascertain their carbon emissions and their assumed carbon credits. Environmental accounting will be an enormous growth area over the next few years. This practicum will provide an excellent opportunity for you to move your career forward into an emerging global oppportunity. Please check out the GCC website for further updates.
