Advanced Standing
Credit
Specified credit means that a student does not have to complete a particular subject within their current program. Specified credit is awarded for;
- completion of graduate level subjects from tertiary institutions which are approved as direct equivalents to subjects offered in the program
- completion of subjects from another program at the University of Melbourne that are compulsory subjects in the current program
Credit is awarded as specified subjects that are deemed to have been completed. Approved credit will reduce the number of subjects required to be completed to meet the requirements of the degree. Credit will not be awarded for previous study completed at an undergraduate level.
Unspecified credit
Unspecified credit is awarded as recognition for studies undertaken for which no direct subject equivalent exists in the current program. Credit is awarded as a number of credit points. Unspecified credit will not be awarded for work experience.
Exemption
Exemption means a student is exempted from having to study a particular subject within their current program - based on previous completion of a similar subject. A replacement subject is required to be taken in its place. An approved exemption does not reduce the number of subjects required to be completed to meet the requirements of the degree.
Exemption will only be granted for core subjects, not elective subjects. Students must have access to sufficient choices in subjects before an exemption will be granted. A student who was awarded an exemption enrols in an alternative subject, as approved by the Academic Program Director, with no variation to the points value of the program or fee liability incurred.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications for advanced standing should be made on the Application for Advanced Standing form (PDF 476kb). Printed copies of this form are available from the Melbourne Graduate School of Management, located on Level 4 of 198 Berkeley Street. Applications should normally be submitted to the Melbourne Graduate School of Management at the time of application or before enrolment is finalised. For studies not undertaken at the University of Melbourne, applicants need to provide:
- a certified copy of transcript of results for the subject/s for which credit is sought;
- a full copy of the subject outline from the year the subject/s was completed, which includes details of subject content, assessment requirements, hours per week, and weighting of subject/s within the program expressed as a proportion of the whole.
The Academic Programs Committee has delegated the review of applications for advanced standing to the Academic Program Director of each program, who will make recommendations for consideration and approval by the Associate Dean (Academic Programs). Where appropriate, advice and/or recommendations from academic departments may also be sought in evaluating applications.
It is important to highlight that any advanced standing granted by the Melbourne Graduate School of Management may not meet the accreditation requirements of professional bodies and organisations. Students must seek advice from the accreditation body on whether the basis for the awarding of advanced standing still meets their requirements.
Advanced Standing Policy
(approved by Faculty Executive 16 July 2008)
This policy is underpinned by the University Policy on Advanced Standing (PDF 62kb) and by University statutes 5.4 and 11.1 and should be interpreted with reference to these documents.
1. Credit or exemption may only be approved for subjects which are consistent in content and assessment with the subject for which exemption or credit is being requested.
2. Students enrolling in Melbourne Graduate School of Management programs will be expected to complete at least 50% of the points required for the award, or 100 points, whichever is the lesser.
3. At the discretion of the Associate Dean (Academic Programs), credit may be granted for subjects completed as part of an Honours degree (or the equivalent of an Honours degree) in a Commerce discipline or as part of a Master's degree that the student is presently enrolled in or has already completed. Credit will be for a maximum of 50% of the course load.
4. Students accepted into the second year of the Master of Financial Management after completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance will be credited with 100 points towards the first year of the Master of Financial Management.
5. No credit will be granted for undergraduate subjects taken as part of an undergraduate degree, although exemptions may be granted.
6. Credit may be granted for core or elective subjects.
7. Neither credit nor exemption will be granted for work experience.
8. Credit or exemption for a subject is not normally granted when the subject was completed more than ten years prior to the year of application.
9. Subject to limitations on the amount and type of advanced standing available to an enrolling student, the Melbourne Graduate School of Management may establish agreements with partner institutions specifying advanced standing that will be awarded to students articulating from certain programs offered at these institutions. Where accreditation requirements are specific, it may not be possible to grant maximum credit of 50%.
10. Students transferring from the 16 subject Master of Applied Commerce & Master of Business and Information Technology programs to the 12 subject Master of Applied Commerce and Master of Business and Information Technology programs should note that credit will not be awarded for the Fundamental subjects; 325-491 Business Fundamentals or the Level 2/3 subject.
Maximum Credit Awarded
Credit awarded will not exceed 50% of the requirements of the program. No credit will be granted for the research component of a graduate coursework degree.
Appeals Procedure
Students may appeal to the Associate Dean (Academic Programs) concerning the outcome of an application for advanced standing. The appeal must be lodged in the academic year that credit is applied for.
Community Access Program (CAP)
Credit may be granted for subjects completed under the Community Access Program (CAP), provided the student completed the subject as an ‘assessed’ student and a result is given, and the subject complies with all other conditions of the program and does not contravene other credit guidelines detailed in this document. Students can only receive credit for subjects completed as part of the CAP program for a maximum of 50% of the requirements of the course.
